A new guide from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology will help health care providers better understand how to integrate federal health information privacy and security requirements into their practices.

The new guide provides updated information about compliance with privacy and security requirements for Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record Incentive Programs as well as HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules.

The Office of Civil Rights, which enforces HIPAA rules, expects to audit more than 100 facilities later this year. The new guide contains valuable links to key Office of Civil Rights websites, including audit protocols. Members are advised to use the new guide to review policies and procedures, identify weaknesses and develop strategies to ensure that you remain in compliance with HIPAA rules.
