ProPublica, a website that offers media assistance, has launched Nursing Home Inspect, which features a news application that allows anyone to easily search and analyze details of CMS nursing home inspections.
Media and consumers must visit a skilled nursing facility prior to making judgment. Ask residents or family members if they would recommend the facility and ask the administrator about staffing levels and consistent assignment. Patterns of poor performance are more of a red flag that a single occurrence.
ProPublica’s application allows users to search across all reports by any keyword to see if there are any patterns in citations. You can also search by location, severity of the deficiency and more. "Having the reports searchable online will help identify problematic trends and encourage homes to make needed fixes faster," senior reporter and president of the Association of Health Care Journalists, Charlie Ornstein, writes. The association also has a tip sheet for reporters hoping to utilize Nursing Home Inspect for their own localized reporting.
